Once upon a time there lived a certain man and his wife who had two cornfields, three cows, two oxen, five sheep and 13 children.0:25
Twelve of the children were called by names common in the country, but the 13th child got a strange name of Merriamind.0:37
The 13 children grew taller and stronger every year and they did hard work earning their living.0:47
But when the youngest was old enough to look after his father's sheep there happened the great fair to which everybody in the neighbourhood went.0:55
As the fair happened only once in seven years.1:06
The man and his family couldn't miss it.1:10
The father opened the bag in which he kept his money and gave every one of the 13 a silver penny.1:13
The boys and girls had never before owned so much pocket money and thinking of what they should buy, they dressed themselves in their holiday clothes and set out with their father and mother to the fair before evening.1:22
The 12 of the children had spent their money on clothes and all sorts of beautiful things.1:36
But Merriamd hadn't bought anything.1:42
The reason was that he had set his heart upon a fiddle.1:46
Unfortunately, fiddles cost a lot more than a silver penny.1:50
The sun was getting low and red upon the hill and Merry Mind was still looking about.1:56
Suddenly he saw a little grey haired man with just one old dirty fiddle, the strings of which were broken.2:03
Buy the fiddle my young master, he said as Merry Mind came up to him.2:13

He was a handy boy and could mend the strings while watching his father's sheep.2:31

He spent all his time, both night and day upon them, but no string would hold on his fiddle.2:47
At last Merriamd decided to leave home where everyone except his mother laughed at him and go to seek his fortune.2:55
On a summer morning with the broken stringed fiddle under his arm, Merry Mind walked through the woods and found himself in the mountains.3:06
He was so tired of his journey that he fell asleep in a deserted cottage in the valley.3:18
He woke up in the middle of the night and saw that the valley was full of inhabitants and they were all busy in houses, in fields and in mills.3:25
They were wearing fine clothes and looked rich, but very unhappy.3:35
Even the birds of that valley did not sing.3:41
They were too busy building their nests.3:44
The cats did not lie by the fire.3:47
They were all on the watch for mice.3:49
The dogs went out after hares, and the cows and sheep grazed without stopping.3:53
In the middle of the valley there stood a beautiful castle.4:01
The gates stood open and Merry Mind walked in.4:05
The courtyard was full of people who were so busy working that they didn't even look up at the boy.4:09
In the highest tower of that busy castle, at a window from which she could see the whole valley, there sat a noble lady.4:16
Her dress was rich, her hair was iron grey, her look was sour and gloomy.4:26
She and her 12 maidens were spinning as hard as they could, but all the yarn they made was black.4:34
No one in or out of the castle would greet Merry Mind or answer his questions.4:42
They said, we have no time to talk.4:48
The only person who talked to him was a soldier.4:52
He told the boy the story of the valley.4:55
This valley belongs to the lady of the castle, whose name is Dame Dreary.5:00
She had another name in her youth.5:08
They called her Lady Littlecare.5:10
And then the valley was the happiest and the most beautiful place in the whole country.5:13
There were May games, harvest festivals and Christmas parties among them.5:19
Shepherds piped on the hillsides, people sang in the fields and laughter was heard in every house.5:26
In the evening, all that was changed.5:34
Some say it was because of a magic ring which fell from the lady's finger and she became Dame Dreary.5:40
Hard work and hard times spread over the valley.5:48
They say it will be so till Dame Dreary lays down her distaff and dances.5:53
