Welcome everyone to Ion Britain.0:02
I'm Rob Wellan, your host, and I am speaking to you from the town of Sandown on the Isle of Wight.0:05
It's carnival time here.0:10
And with me is a local teacher at Sandown Secondary School, Fiona Banks, who helps out each year with the different carnival events and performances.0:12
Welcome to the show, Fiona.0:20
Thanks, Rob.0:22
It's great to be here.0:23
Fiona, tell us about the carnival.0:25
Well, there are many carnival events at different times in the year.0:27
In Sandown, we crown the carnival queens.0:31
In May, there is a children's carnival and parade.0:34
In July, we even have a Christmas carnival day.0:38
But today's carnival is my favourite because it takes place in the dark.0:42
It's a perfect evening for a parade and fireworks display.0:48
As you can see, Rob, people are waiting for the parade to start and are dancing in the streets.0:53
Yes, it's definitely a fun time.0:59
Tell us about the parade.1:01
Well, it starts in the town centre and goes down the high street.1:03
People wear fantastic costumes and hold lights and candles.1:08
It's very magical.1:14
The parade ends at the seaside.1:16
Then what happens?1:18
There is a spectacular fireworks display.1:20
Then there is food, music and dancing beside the sea.1:23
It becomes a great big party that lasts all night.1:29
No one gets to bed until the next morning.1:33
Sounds amazing.1:36
It is.1:37
We are really proud of our town and the carnival.1:38
Thanks for talking to us, Fiona.1:42
You're welcome.1:44
