Hi, and welcome to the show.0:07
Today we are speaking to Michelle Whitton.0:09
Michelle is a nurse at our local hospital and offers her services to dozens of people who arrive at the hospital reception with health complaints every day.0:12
Welcome to the show, Michelle.0:21
So, Michelle, can you tell us what the most common injuries and ailments are and maybe give our listeners an idea about how to treat them?0:24
Certainly, out of the many ailments and injuries, headaches are probably the most common health complaint.0:32
Usually a simple headache tablet is enough to cure this, but headaches that last for a long period of time could mean there is a more serious health problem.0:39
In that case, patients have to see a doctor.0:48
Can you tell us what else is common?0:53
I guess having a cold is pretty common, too.0:55
Of course, many people do get colds, but that's mostly in the winter.0:58
I think there are other ailments and injuries that are more common.1:02
In fact, many people hurt themselves in their own homes.1:06
What kind of things do you have to treat?1:10
Well, many people cut their fingers at home, often while preparing a meal.1:13
Usually this isn't very serious, but occasionally someone cuts themselves very badly and they have to come to me for treatment.1:18
Oh, I hadn't thought of that.1:26
Are there other places where people injure themselves?1:28
People doing sports often get minor injuries.1:31
Even going for a walk can be dangerous.1:35
Every month I see many people with sprained ankles.1:37
In that case, I just tell them to take an aspirin.1:41
That seems to be the answer to most things.1:44
Do you ever suggest something different?1:47
Well, we only deal with minor injuries and ailments.1:49
Taking an aspirin to relieve the pain is usually the best thing to do.1:52
Of course, rest always helps, too.1:56
So does anyone really need to come and see you if they have a minor ailment?1:59
Often people can help themselves quite easily.2:05
But I enjoy helping people and I can give advice whenever it's needed.2:07
Well, that's all we have time for today.2:14
Thanks very much for coming in, Michelangelo.2:17
