Skill 6, Exercise 2, Page 113 Speaker 1 I remember it was a Saturday night and I had been out to the cinema with my friend Julia and we decided to walk home.0:02
So I didn't get back until about 1am As I walked up the path, I could just feel that something was wrong and I started to feel afraid.0:17
Once I opened the door, I realized what had happened.0:26
I couldn't believe my eyes.0:30
My things were thrown here and there and the place was a mess.0:32
I was shocked and called the police right away, but of course they never arrested anyone.0:36
They say it happens all the time.0:42
Speaker 2 I actually didn't know that anything had happened until weeks after the crime.0:45
And to be totally honest, I feel really ashamed of myself for being so naive.0:52
But I can tell you that I learnt my lesson.0:57
It was a few months ago that I entered this competition and the prize was a holiday in Tanzania.0:59
The following week I got a message saying that I won, but I would just have to pay £100 for tax and Visa and so on.1:05
I was delighted and sent the money.1:13
Of course I heard nothing from them and their email address didn't work anymore.1:16
Of course, I found out later that it was all a scam.1:20
Speaker 3 I find it hard to believe how things have changed.1:25
There didn't used to be so many burglaries or muggings in the past.1:31
I remember when I was young I used to be able to go wherever I liked at any time of the day or night and not have to worry about being mugged or anything.1:36
Now I stay in most evenings or if I do go out, I always have a friend pick me up from the house just to be on the safe side.1:47
You know, my dad is the same.1:55
He's 78 now, you know, and he bought an Alsatian dog to guard the House.1:58
Speaker 4 There has never been so much crime in my part of town before.2:06
I'm not sure if anyone feels safe anymore.2:12
I saw two burglars coming out of a house carrying bags a few nights ago and the police chasing them.2:15
It's really out of control.2:20
And you know what?2:22
I think if we allow these criminals to get away with their crimes, they'll do the same thing again.2:23
And if we just send them to prison for three or six months, they'll be back on the streets doing the same thing.2:28
No, we've got to be a lot tougher with these people and make them understand that they won't get a second chance.2:34
Speaker 5 It's clear that crime is on the increase, and we need to do something to stop it.2:42
I know several people who have been victims of crime over the past years.2:49
I'm not sure that catching criminals and sending them to prison is the best solution, though.2:54
We need to stop the crime before it happens, and to do that, we need to have more officers on the streets.2:59
I think if criminals see this, they will understand that there is more of a risk that they will go to prison and they will think twice before committing the crime.3:06
