Today on Personal Health, we're going to talk about meditation, and here to tell us all about it is Dr. Claire Sweeney.0:02
Welcome, Dr. Sweeney.0:11
Thank you, it's great to be here.0:12
So, first things first, what exactly is meditation?0:14
Well, meditation is a way for a person to achieve inner peace and a relaxed state of mind.0:19
It is a perfect technique to escape from your worries and help yourself to cope with the problems of daily life better.0:26
It is not related to a particular religion.0:34
It is simply a method of mental and physical relaxation.0:37
And how do you do it?0:41
When a person meditates, they stay calm and quiet for a period of time in a comfortable position.0:43
The key to achieving a calm state of mind is to focus on your breathing and clear your mind.0:51
Well, it isn't easy to think of nothing, especially when your mind is filled with the everyday problems of your busy life.1:01
That though is the point.1:09
Meditation is a skill that has to be acquired over time through practice.1:11
The good news though is that even the practice is helpful.1:17
By decluttering your mind, even if it is only for a few minutes a day, you will feel less stressed and more relaxed.1:21
And meditation has some other benefits, doesn't it?1:30
From a medical point of view, meditation is a proven way to lower blood pressure.1:35
It can help asthma sufferers to breathe more easily.1:41
It can also help people who suffer from insomnia.1:45
By relaxing an overactive and energetic mind.1:48
So, let's all meditate!1:51
Once you can relax and achieve a state of mind that is clear and blank, you can leave your worries behind.1:56
At this point you may cry or smile without knowing the reason why.2:02
You may even become so relaxed that you fall asleep.2:07
And when you wake up, you will feel completely at ease with yourself.2:11
Well, I'm afraid that's all we've got time for today.2:15
Thank you, Dr. Sweeney.2:18
Next week on the show, we shall have—2:20
