With us in the studio today is counselling psychologist Dr. James Smith.0:12
Dr. Smith is here to talk about peer pressure.0:16
Dr. Smith, welcome to the program.0:19
Well, there are two types of peer pressure, good peer pressure and bad peer pressure.0:23
Good peer pressure is when your friends persuade you to do something positive that you maybe didn't have the courage to try.0:29
It can also be your friends convincing you not to do something because it is not in your best interest.0:36
Bad peer pressure, on the other hand, is when your peers persuade you to experience or do something that you don't want to do.0:42
Now, most of the time, our peers have an extremely positive influence on our lives.0:50
Their influence is not positive and negative in equal measure.0:55
The trick is learning to reduce the negative impact they sometimes have.0:59
Teens give in to bad peer pressure for many reasons.1:04
Perhaps they want to be liked by a person they admire.1:08
Perhaps they don't want to be the only person not doing something.1:11
Sometimes it can just be because they don't want to be teased by the cool crowd.1:15
So how can teens avoid bad peer pressure?1:21
Well, firstly, they can start by learning to feel comfortable saying no.1:23
With good friends, you should never have to explain why it is you don't want to do something.1:28
Secondly, there is no need to avoid situations where you will be asked by strangers to do things you don't want.1:33
Simply think ahead of time about what you can say.1:39
For example, if you are going to a party and know you will be offered alcohol, there, a good line to have in your head is something like, sorry, but I can't, I'm in training.1:42
These days, teens have to deal with a lot more pressure than in the past.1:52
This is because they are hit with unrealistic images of beauty, celebrity and success every single day.1:57
On the TV, in magazines, in newspapers, etc. Trying to live up to these impossible ideals and cope with peer pressure is very tough for teens.2:03
But I tell the teens who come to see me that becoming an adult means knowing when to go along with the crowd and when to be independent.2:14
I tell them not to worry, that sooner or later they will have the confidence they need to listen to their inner voice in difficult situations rather than listen to others.2:22
I want to end by saying that one of the most important factors in every young person's life is their peers.2:32
This is especially true during the teenage years because it is at this time that the influence of one's peers begins to get greater than that of one's family.2:38
Thank you, Dr. Smith.2:47
