So, Dave, tell us about your job.0:23
Well, I work at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.0:25
It is one of 19 centres around the country with over 400 dedicated local coast Guard rescue teams.0:29
My team is based in Dover and we're responsible for helping people in trouble, mostly at sea, but also on the cliffs or shoreline of the UK.0:36
In total, this covers an area of 1 million square nautical miles of sea and 10,000 nautical miles of coastline.0:44
We provide a 24 hour service for dealing with incoming distress calls and coordinating the rescue effort.0:52
That's our main role, but it's not all we do.0:58
It is also our responsibility to respond to reports of maritime pollution, as well as to use our skills and experience for accident prevention.1:01
This is vital because it can reduce the number of emergencies.1:09
We provide safety education for everyone who sails, either for a living or for fun, as well as give safety talks to students in colleges and schools.1:13
We get called out to all sorts of emergencies, such as helping people who get caught in bad weather when sailing, helping people who have got into trouble while swimming or doing water sports, particularly windsurfers.1:22
We also get lots of call outs for people who get lost.1:34
Many times they are underdressed and they become too cold to help themselves.1:38
To help us successfully rescue people in a number of different situations, at sea and on land, we have four search and rescue helicopters and four emergency towing ships which are also able to fight fires, as well as a1:43
fleet of patrol boats.1:55
Then we have over 3,500 volunteers in the Coast Guard Rescue Service all around the country's coastlines who have been specially trained for search and rescue operations and who have special knowledge of their local areas.1:57
That's not including the special cliff rescue teams around the uk.2:09
It's these people who are our most valuable asset and together we do everything we can to help people who are in trouble.2:13
In 2005 alone, we dealt with 16,794 incidents.2:20
