Module 5, exercise 4, page 45.0:00
Well, Ruth, perhaps you could begin by telling us how you became interested in art.0:06
Well, surprisingly enough, when I was a child, both my parents used to do a lot of art.0:10
So I grew up surrounded by easels and clay and so on.0:17
But I was never really into it myself.0:22
It was only later in life, when I was having a baby and had to give up my job, that I took up art.0:25
People know you for your painting, but you also do a lot of sculptures.0:32
Which of the two did you begin with?0:36
Although I quickly realized that I'm better at painting.0:40
And when did you realize that you had so much talent?0:44
By 1999, I had been painting for ages and had hundreds of paintings.0:47
One day I sold some of my worst paintings at a local charity event.0:53
And of course I didn't think anything of it.0:58
I mean, no one knew my work anyway.1:01
But a few days later I got a call from a collector who wanted to see my work.1:03
It was only then that I realised that I had talent.1:09
Anyway, I showed him some of my stuff and he bought four paintings for a total of £25,000.1:16
And I imagine that was just the beginning.1:26
Everything just took off from there.1:30
The phone kept ringing and I started to have my first real exhibitions.1:33
And in some of the major cities too.1:37
How did you deal with the success, Ruth?1:40
How did you manage the role of a mother and a celebrity artist at the same time?1:43
Most people would think that it's difficult, but I've always had lots of help and in fact, I've got it under control.1:49
Remember, I still do a lot of my work at home, so I spend a lot of time with my kid.1:57
Would you say you've truly found your perfect job?2:03
I don't know if I would say the perfect job.2:06
I would like to try some new things too in the future.2:09
Maybe designing for theatre or film or even fashion.2:13
But I'm very happy at the moment, so I shouldn't complain.2:17
