My Year in Antarctica Week 1 My Antarctic Adventure begins.0:27
Well, here I am at the scientific research station in Antarctica, the coldest, windiest and driest continent in the world.0:36
It's summer right now, so the weather is quite mild.0:46
It's zero degrees Celsius today.0:50
There are still a lot of gales though.0:53
And of course the sun never sets in the summer, which is really weird.0:56
Despite the freezing cold, the scenery and wildlife here are incredible.1:00
There are seals everywhere and yesterday I saw a humpback whale.1:05
Everyone is warning me about the winter here.1:10
The temperature will drop to about minus 40 degrees Celsius and the sun won't rise at all.1:13
There will only be 20 of us and we won't have any visitors for seven months.1:19
It'll be difficult, but at least I'm going to be very busy.1:24
As a marine biologist, I'm going to study the way marine wildlife adapts to extreme temperatures.1:28
I'm also going to do a survey of the threatened emperor penguin.1:36
I can't wait to start tomorrow.1:39
All the newcomers are going on a survival course for a week with skidoos and sledges.1:43
We're going to camp in the snow and learn things like what to do if we fall down a crevasse.1:49
I hope there won't be a blizzard like the one we had on my first day here.1:55
I'll tell you all about the course when I'm back at the research station next week.2:01
