Let's start, Kay, by telling us exactly what is an intentional community.0:20
An intentional community is a group of people coming together in a place they create, to live in a particular way.0:26
They share similar values and try to live by them.0:32
So what is your community, Earth Refuge, all about?0:36
Well, we are a group of over 100 people of different ages, from a variety of backgrounds, that work together to live in harmony with nature.0:40
We are an eco-village.0:48
Our goal is to have an environmentally friendly lifestyle.0:50
A noble idea, but how do you actually achieve that?0:54
It's not as difficult as you think.0:57
We rely on solar energy and hydropower.1:00
We recycle our water.1:03
Everyone in the community works in certain essential areas, such as gardening.1:05
We also raise our own livestock and have eco-friendly businesses to raise income for the community.1:11
Does every member of the community have a job?1:18
They all contribute to the community, if that's what you mean.1:21
Some members work in one of our businesses, such as carpentry.1:24
Others provide a service, like childcare or cooking.1:28
Everyone has a role in our community.1:32
Does each member or family have their own house in your community?1:35
We have a variety of housing types, from small cabins and homes to multi-family structures.1:40
They are all built with environmentally friendly materials, and some are completely self-sustainable.1:46
We call such houses earthships, as they leave no harmful impact on the environment.1:53
Besides work, how do the members interact in the community?1:58
It's a very supportive environment.2:02
We have lots of sporting and recreational events.2:04
There is a central lodge where we all meet to discuss and solve any problems that come up.2:08
Most of our social events happen there too.2:13

What is life like for them?2:19
They are very involved in the community.2:21
They help out with chores, take classes in skills such as woodwork, and are involved in a variety of sports.2:24
They also go to home schools in different homes in the community, depending on their age.2:31
How much contact does your community have with the outside world?2:36
We have internet access.2:43
Many of our members travel.2:45
The children often go on educational trips.2:48
We even have tours and various workshops in the spring for visitors who come to the village to take part in.2:51
So what if someone wants to join your community, what do they have to do?2:57
Well, it's a major change in lifestyle, so we want people to be sure before they make such an important decision.3:01
That's why we have a person try it out for a 6-month period as a resident before they leave their old life behind and move in.3:08
At the end of the 6 months, we discuss it with the person to see if it is the right decision for all of us.3:16
Your ecovillage sounds like an ideal place to live, and it plays an important role in helping the environment.3:23
