Jeff, can you tell us what made you decide to study abroad?0:16
Well, first I was strongly encouraged by my family, especially my older brother who had studied abroad, to try it out.0:20
I was very hesitant in the beginning because even though I am a very independent person, I had never been away from home before.0:26
But the main reason I decided to study abroad was to meet new people and learn about a new culture.0:34
What drew you to Germany for your study abroad program?0:39
Choosing where to study abroad was a difficult choice.0:43
I had a hard time finding courses for a summer semester.0:46
I chose Germany because my father is German.0:49
And even though I'm not fluent in German, I felt confident enough to be able to communicate with people in the city.0:52
But most importantly, it also fit perfectly with classes that I could use towards my major, so I quickly began the application process.0:59
What was the most rewarding part of your stay?1:06
I think the best part of studying abroad was the feeling that I belonged in the city.1:09
Little things like strangers asking me for directions in German and me knowing the answer, and ordering food in German were rewarding experiences for me.1:13
Did you run into any problems while studying abroad?1:21
Well, the only problem I had was when I was traveling from the United States to Germany.1:25
In general, I'm afraid of flying, so going across the Atlantic alone was a stressful experience for me.1:29
My first flight was 3 hours late, so I missed my connecting flight to Berlin.1:34
After a few hours, I ended up taking the train from Frankfurt to Berlin.1:39
Can you tell us about your living accommodations?1:43
Well, through the university program, I had a choice to either live with a host family or find a flat in the city.1:46
I chose to stay with a host family and I will never regret that decision.1:51
It turned out to be a great experience.1:55
My host family was a mother and her 8-year-old son.1:58
She was a music producer and was fun to speak with.2:00
She really helped me improve my German speaking skills and I am thankful for that.2:03
They lived in a nice but noisy flat in the city centre, which didn't bother me at all.2:08
Would you recommend studying abroad and staying with a host family to other people?2:13
I think it's a great experience, and I would definitely do something like this again in the future.2:19
