Tonight our guest is Graham Nixon from Lancashire, who is here to tell us all about how he and a group of volunteers turned their town from a crime-riddled problem area into a peaceful, crime-free haven.0:10

So why don't you tell us what your town was like 2 years ago?0:26
There were all sorts of petty crimes happening on a daily basis.0:32
The streets weren't safe.0:35
We had problems with dangerous drivers and speeding, which with a lot of young families living in the area was very worrying.0:37
What other problems did you have?0:44
Local businesses were affected by vandalism and shoplifting.0:46
Then when people started getting mugged on the streets, I decided it was time to say enough is enough and take back the streets of our town.0:50
So how did you go about that?0:58
Well, first of all, I started a community action group and asked concerned members of the public to join.1:00
Then we sat down and talked about what we could do.1:06
At first, there was a small number of us, but then once we got the ball rolling and our campaign got more publicity, then more and more people joined in.1:09
So what was the first thing that you did?1:17
Well, I went to the council offices and demanded that they put speed limits and speed bumps on a number of the roads.1:19
They agreed and even went so far as to install speed cameras as well.1:25
They were willing to get it done without much delay, so that was a great success.1:30
That sounds quick and easy.1:34
Yes, but the vandalism wasn't so easy to deal with.1:36
We couldn't catch the vandals, and repairing the damage was time-consuming and expensive.1:39
Anyway, we had invited the St John's Ambulance Brigade.1:44
The Venture Scouts, and a number of other clubs to set up groups in our town, so that teens and young adults would have some worthwhile activities to take part in.1:47
And to our surprise, the acts of vandalism became less frequent.1:56
So you think it was being done by bored teenagers?1:59
We also set up a neighbourhood watch scheme, cleaned up the streets and parks, and much more.2:05
